BRIDGEPORT  — A Stratford mother who went to her daughter’s middle school with a handgun has been placed on special probation that could lead to dismissal of the charge.

The Connecticut Post  reports that under the program for nonviolent offenders, 37-year-old Elizabeth Vargas, of Stratford, did not plead guilty to possession of a weapon on school grounds, but was placed on 18 months of probation Wednesday. If she refrains from criminal activity during that period, the charge will be dismissed.

Police say Vargas was called to her daughter’s school last month about a disciplinary issue. An administrator called police. Vargas, who had a permit for the unloaded gun, said she was on her way to a shooting range when she was called to the school.

Her lawyer said her arrest was “unfortunate.”
