CROMWELL — A serious crash delayed traffic on I-91 Thursday morning.

The accident happened on I-91 North between exits 22 and 23 shortly before 10 a.m. State police originally said one car was involved and the driver was injured, but have since updated that to say that two cars were involved, leaving one dead and one seriously injured.

A Honda Accord was driving north in the left lane of four between exits 22 and 23, while a Volkswagen Beetle, driven by Jemel Williams, 25, of Middletown, was driving in the right of the four lanes. The Beetle lost control and hit the Honda. The Beetle then veered off the road into the left shoulder and onto the grass, before hitting the median and coming to a stop against a tree.

The driver of the Honda was not injured, but the driver of the Beetle–Jemel Williams–was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger in the Beetle, a 29-year-old from Hartford, suffered a serious injury and was taken to Hartford Hospital via LifeStar. He is in critical condition.

Police are still investigating what caused the Beetle to lose control. If you have any information please call State Police Troop H at 860-534-1000.
