Man shot to death in New Haven

NEW HAVEN — A man was found shot in the chest in the passenger seat of a car Friday evening near the New Haven Green.

A woman driving a white Honda called 911 just after 9 p.m. to report that her male passenger had been shot and was seriously injured.

Officers and EMT crews were immediately dispatched to the area near Orange and Eld Streets, but the SUV was no longer in the area. Police found that the caller had continued driving beyond the initial location. She eventually parked a short distance away on State Street.

Arriving EMTs found the passenger bleeding extensively, having sustained a single gunshot wound to the chest.

The victim was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital where he was pronounced dead around 11 p.m.

The shooting is being investigated as a homicide and police say it’s unclear where the shooting occurred, though at this point, they think he  was shot in an apartment complex on Walnut Street, about six blocks away.

They spent several hours combing through one of the units at the complex. That scene was finally cleared by about 9 a.m. Saturday.

Detectives are seeking the public’s assistance in this case. They ask anyone who may have witnessed the shooting to contact them anonymously at (203) 946-6304.
