HARTFORD — Democratic Gov. Dan Malloy is asking Connecticut legislative leaders to come up with ideas by next week for cutting the current fiscal year budget, stressing that everyone needs to act quickly.

Malloy on Tuesday offered some of his own ideas, including what he called an “expedited reduction of the state workforce” that would save $6 million.

He also proposed reducing non-education aid to cities and towns by $20 million.

Malloy wants lawmakers to return with their ideas by March 14. He sent a letter to lawmakers on Tuesday with his requests, which you can read here.

The fiscal year ends June 30. It is projected to be in deficit by at least $220 million.

It remains unclear whether stalled state payments to hospitals will be released, something legislative leaders have demanded. Malloy says cuts need to be made to cover the cost.
