EAST HADDAM — A man has been flown by helicopter to a Hartford hospital after falling from a high and rock cliff at Devil’s Hopyard State Park in East Haddam.

The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection says the 24-year-old Moodus man was sitting on the cliff with another man and two women when he fell into a heavily wooded and rocky area below.

The agency was notified of the fall around 2:15 p.m. Thursday.

Rescue workers had to traverse more than a mile into the woods to reach the man and carry him out. A Life Star helicopter that landed at a nearby golf course flew him to Hartford Hospital.

Officials said the man appeared to have serious injuries.

DEEP Environmental Conservation Officers, CT State Police, and the East Haddam and Lyme Fire Departments assisted with the man’s rescue.
