NORTH HAVEN -- Two people were killed and one critically injured in a crash on I-91 early Friday morning.

Crews responded to I-91 Northbound near exit 10 at about 1:15 a.m. Friday for a report of a one-car crash.

The car had somehow left the highway and hit a tree, and then went into the woods. The force of the crash ejected two of the three people in the car.

Keith Burwell, 26, of Manchester, and Virginia Brown, 24, of New Britain, were killed. Brown was taken by ambulance to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, and Burwell was pronounced at the scene.

Matthew Wilson, 25, of Manchester, was able to exit the vehicle on his own, and was later taken to Yale New Haven Hospital with serious injuries.

Burwell and Wilson were alums of the University of Hartford.

"He really had a heart for humanity, nice kid, well respected, really loving individual and there isn't a cross word, no one can say a cross word about him because he had a genuinely kind soul," said Delois Lindsey, Assistant VP of Student Development, as she recalled her memories of Burwell. " I love my kids and when we lose one, it's like losing one of your kids, it doesn't hurt any less."

The crash remains under investigation.
