NEW HAVEN  — Officials say a Yale University student who was treated last month for bacterial meningitis has been hospitalized again.

Director of Yale Health Dr. Paul Genecin says the student who was hospitalized Feb. 14 for meningococcal disease has been hospitalized out-of-state for what appears to be a recurrence of the initial infection. The diagnosis hasn’t been confirmed.

Genecin says the university and local and state departments of health have begun identifying and contacting people who’ve recently had close or extended contact with the student as a precaution.

He says the student is showing signs of improvement.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention says bacterial meningitis can cause life-threatening infections that require immediate medical attention. The severity of the illness and the treatment for it depend on the cause.
