NEW BRITAIN--Several students were arrested after dismissal at New Britain High School on Wednesday after getting into a fight in front of the school.

About a dozen students were part of the fight, and 11 were arrested: eight juveniles, three adults. One of the adults, a 21-year-old, had a knife and was swinging it around, but those involved only suffered minor injuries.

The fight started with three students in front of the school at 2:15 p.m., around dismissal, and the high school security staff contacted the school resource officer, who then called in police to help de-escalate the situation, which was getting out of hand after the mother of two of the students got involved and pushed a police officer and hit a student. Police had to use a Taser to subdue her. The man with the knife then turned up, but he too was subdued.

Part of the chaos was due to the hundreds of recently dismissed students watching the situation.

The fight occurred just hours before a meet and greet was scheduled to take place in the high school cafeteria so that the community could be introduced to the new superintendent, Nancy Sarra.

There will be extra police presence before and after school at the high school on March 24.
