Boston ammonia leak

BOSTON–The Boston Fire Department has announced that one person is dead after an ammonia leak in the Seaport District.

At 5:55 p.m. Boston firefighters responded to the Stavis Seafoods Warehouse located at 7 Channel St. for a large ammonia leak.

It was declared a level 3 hazmat situation, meaning all firefighters entering the building had to be in fully encapsulated suits and use air tanks.

While searching the building a body of a male worker was found, according to the Boston Fire Department. Everyone else who was inside is accounted for. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.

The investigation will be conducted by fire investigators, Boston Police, and the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.

The facility is a cold storage facility, and it took about 3 1/2 hours to turn off the leak. The Boston Fire Department announced it had turned the valve off after 9:20 p.m. There are 5,300 pounds of ammonia in the building.
