NEW BRITAIN -- More police will be visible at New Britain High School Thursday morning and afternoon following an after-school brawl on Wednesday where 11 people were arrested.

Eleven students and adults were arrested after a fight at dismissal time Wednesday. About a dozen students were part of the fight, and eight juveniles, three adults were arrested. One of the adults, a 21-year-old, had a knife and was swinging it around, but those involved only suffered minor injuries.

The fight started with three students in front of the school at 2:15 p.m., around dismissal, and the high school security staff contacted the school resource officer, who then called in police to help de-escalate the situation, which was getting out of hand after the mother of two of the students got involved and pushed a police officer and hit a student. Police had to use a Taser to subdue her. The man with the knife then turned up, but he too was subdued.

Part of the chaos was due to the hundreds of recently dismissed students watching the situation.

The fight occurred just hours before a meet and greet was scheduled to take place in the high school cafeteria so that the community could be introduced to the new superintendent, Nancy Sarra.
