HARTFORD — A new study indicates that life for Hispanics living in Connecticut may not be up-to-par.

24/7 Wall St., a corporation that produces financial news, analyzed nine different factors to determine the “worst” states to live in for Hispanics based on the racial gaps in resources and opportunities. The study only included states in which more than 5 percent of the population was Hispanic.

Some of the key measures included using Census data to determine median household income, poverty levels, high school and college attendance rates and home ownership. The group also used unemployment data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, incarceration rates from the Prison Policy Initiative, and mortality based on numbers from the CDC. Student language proficiency and unauthorized immigrant population estimates were also taken into account.

Based on the data, Connecticut is the second “worst” state in the nation for Hispanics, despite it also being one of the wealthiest states. “High incomes, however, are largely limited to white households,” the press release accompanying the story said. While the median income for white households in the state is $78,959, Hispanic households are making less than $40,000. The white median income is one of the highest in the country, while the Hispanic median income is one of the lowest.

Another finding was that while Connecticut can boast about its low poverty rate of 6.1 percent for white people, 26.5 percent of Hispanics in the state fall below the poverty line.
