WATERFORD – A possible pipe bomb that closed Route 85 in Waterford appears to be metal cylinder filled with marijuana instead.

Route 85 was closed in Waterford early Wednesday afternoon while police investigated a “suspicious item”.

Just after 1:30 p.m. police were alerted by a driver to a possible pipe bomb spotted on the side of the road.

Police did find a metal cylindrical pipe which was capped at both ends and, as a precaution, Route 85 was closed to all traffic between 1096 Hartford Turnpike, near Harvey Building Products, and 1080 Hartford Turnpike near the New London-Waterford Speed Bowl.

The item was secured and rendered safe by members of Connecticut State Police Emergency Services Unit.

It was determined it was not a pipe bomb, no type of explosive was located, and there was no threat to the public from the item, but a green leafy substance, possibly marijuana, was located inside.

Anyone having information about this is asked to contact the Waterford Police Department at (860) 442-9451.
