NEW HAVEN – A Hamden man was critically injured after being shot in the groin early Saturday morning.

An on-duty New Haven officer, stationed near Water Street, reported several shots in the area around Cody’s Diner just before 2:30 a.m. As he approached the east side of the eatery to investigate, he found a man bleeding heavily from a gunshot wound.

The victim, Tauheed Harvey, 28, of Hamden, was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital and rushed into emergency surgery. He was listed in critical condition.

Police said that Harvey and another man may have been arguing while waiting outside the diner. The fight most likely escalated until one man pulled out a gun and fired off several rounds.

The suspect has not been identified at this time, although police are working on potential leads. Witnesses told police that a man in a black sweatshirt ran away from the scene.

Water Street was closed between Brewery Street and Chestnut Street for most of the morning due to the investigation, but has since reopened. The investigation is ongoing.

Police are asking anyone with information or a description of the shooter to anonymously call the New Haven Police Department at (203) 946-6304.
