HARTFORD — The U.S. military has been taking lessons from colleges and universities as it develops programs to prevent sexual assault.

Defense Department officials visited colleges around the country as they prepared a comprehensive strategy published in 2014.

The latest example came last month as an Air Force delegation visited the campus of Connecticut College. The small liberal arts school several years ago implemented a program stressing the role of peer influence that the Air Force is now rolling out across all its installations.

Nate Galbreath is the senior executive adviser for the Pentagon’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office. He said it has been helpful to learn from colleges and universities because, like the armed forces, they have large numbers of young adults who are the greatest risk for sexual assault.
