New Haven police investigating homicide

NEW HAVEN — Police are investigating a homicide that happened early Thursday morning.

Police said at 1:13 a.m., firefighters were called to the area in front of 26 May St. for a report of a man down on the sidewalk. When they arrived, they found the man had been shot once to the back of his head.

Robert Richardson, 22, of State Street in New Haven, was taken  by ambulance to Yale – New Haven Hospital. He was pronounced dead by medical staff at 1:50 a.m.

According to police there is no information on a suspect’s description, however, an SUV was seen leaving the area with its headlights off.

The department’s forensic and major crimes divisions were investigating.
