Oldest and largest crossword tournament takes place in Stamford

STAMFORD - It is a word game that's been around for ages, with millions of fans around the world.

Directed by New York Times Crossword Puzzle Editor Will Shortz, the country's oldest and largest crossword competition came to Stamford.

"Crosswords are a solitary activity, said Shortz. "You do them at home, on the bus, the train, or in bed, and you don`t know how good you are."

Puzzle-solvers tackled eight original crosswords, created and edited especially for this event. Scoring is based on accuracy and speed.

Prizes are awarded in more than 20 categories, including a $5,000 grand prize.

"When you hang out with a bunch of puzzle people, it`s just a good time," he said.
