TORRINGTON – Police are investigating a serious accident involving a car and a motorcycle that happened Sunday afternoon.

Just after 4 p.m. police were called to a motor vehicle crash on Highland Avenue at the intersection of Birden Street.

A 2003 Ford Escape was pulling out of Birden Street onto Highland Avenue when it was hit by a motorcycle traveling west on Highland. The motorcycle hit the driver’s side rear door of the car and there was extensive damage to both the car and the motorcycle.

Police said the man driving the motorcycle was taken to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital and then flown by LifeStar helicopter to Hartford Hospital with life-threatening injuries. His condition was unknown but police said he was reportedly not wearing a helmet.

The car’s driver and passenger in the car were treated and released from Charlotte Hungerford Hospital.

Police were not releasing the names of those involved in the crash and all roads in the area were reopened as of 9 p.m.
