MARLBOROUGH--If you're planning some spring cleanup around the yard over the beautifully forecasted weekend, it better not entail burning.
Connecticut is currently under a High Fire Danger warning.
With no leaves on the trees, leaves on the ground are extremely dry.
Firefighters with the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection call the leaves "one-hour fuel" because after rain they can dry up within an hour.
"The sun is beating down on these leaves and it dries them out, it crinkles and curls them up, and gives them more surface area," Rich Schenk, a DEEP Fire Control Officer, said while demonstrating how fast the leaves burn.
To burn brush, you need to get a permit from your town, but that won't happen this weekend due to the dry conditions.
