PORTLAND – The Portland Fire Department, along with mutual aid provided by the Middletown, Westfield, Glastonbury and East Hampton fire departments, battled a fast-moving brush fire in the Connecticut State Forest on Sunday evening.
Calls started flooding in around 5 p.m. for the large volume of smoke, visible from as far away as Farmington.
The fire was contained in just about three hours, with crews working to extinguish hot spots until about 10 p.m. In total, 15-18 acres were burned in the blaze.
At one point there were about 40 firefighters working on the scene, according to the Portland Fire Chief Robert Shea.
No structures were impacted nor threatened. Mutual aid helped with ATVs, off-road vehicles and other equipment.
The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection forestry division was remaining on scene to monitor the situation throughout the night.
