Hartford

HARTFORD — Hundreds of people with HIV or AIDS, along with activists and advocates, will converge at the Connecticut state Capitol to highlight the continued need for services.

AIDS Connecticut is sponsoring the 16th annual AIDS Awareness Day event Tuesday.

Rally-goers are expected to urge lawmakers to hold the line on HIV and AIDS spending as Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and state legislators grapple with how to cover a projected $900 million deficit in the next fiscal year’s nearly $20 billion budget.

Ideally, they’d like more money. Shawn Lang, deputy director of AIDS Connecticut, says the number of people living with HIV or AIDS has doubled over the last 10 years, but funding hasn’t kept pace.

State officials say at least 10,000 people are living with HIV or AIDS in Connecticut.
