NEW HAVEN -- Hundreds of people gathered in Goffe Street Park to honor musical legend Prince less than a week after his shocking death.

“The Rhythm of the City” concert was a two-hour celebration of the icon’s life and music.

“What music does is it gives you a certain feeling about what’s happening in your life so there’s certain artists that are gonna sing to that,” WYBC Program Director Juan Castillo said. “It’s a way for us to mourn his death but also celebrate his life.”

The concert was organized by 94.3 WYBC, along with the city of New Haven and New Haven Parks and Recreation. It featured performances by National Recording Artists The Rahssan Langley Project, Lamone, Manny James, as well as DJ Kool Keith.

Waterbury artist Lamone Andrews said Prince has been an inspiration to him as a musician.

“He showed no limitations to what he could do, he was just fearless and that’s what I love about him,” Andrews said. “He was the ultimate musician, artist and he just touches your soul.”

Many crowd members praised the city for hosting this event, saying there should be more like it.

“I think that the more that New Haven can get together and be more like a community instead of hurting each other, would be a blessing,” New Haven resident Crystal Arnold said.

Prince has touched New Haven in more than one way.

According to Castillo, he donated money for full scholarships for two residents in a mentorship program the radio station took part in to help local kids overcome obstacles. Prince asked him to keep quiet about the donation, but Castillo said he wants to share it today to support that Prince was more than a musician, but a humanitarian.

“He left us a legacy with his music but it's really all about what he’s done for others,” Castillo said.
