WATERBURY - Two people were killed in a head on collision late Wednesday morning in Waterbury.

Police tell FOX 61 the two cars slammed into each other head on at a curve on Thomaston Avenue around 11:40 a.m., not far from the Department of Motor Vehicles. Officers from both Waterbury Police and State Police spent hours at the scene investigating the crash. The investigation and scene took so long to complete because one of the cars got stuck up on the embankment.

Waterbury Deputy Chief Spagnolo said there were no passengers in either car, but both drivers--a man and a woman--were pronounced dead at the scene.

Spagnolo said, "We believe at this time that one vehicle was traveling north and the other south. It was a head on collision . We don't have a point of impact identified in the roadway yet. It certainly appears speed was a factor."

Police will not release the identities of the victims until next of kin is notified.
