TAPPAN ZEE, N.Y. — Traveling on the Tappan Zee Bridge this weekend? You may be in for a delay.
Due to construction, the northbound lanes of the Tappan Zee Bridge, which carries I-87/I-287 over the Hudson River will have three lanes shut down beginning Friday night, April 29. A replacement bridge is being built along side the old bridge.
Only one northbound lane will remain open to traffic.
The lane closures will start Friday, April 29 at 9 p.m., and continue until Saturday, April 30 at 2 p.m., and then begin again on Saturday, April 30 at 9 p.m., and last until Sunday, May 1 at 2 p.m.
The three northbound lanes will be closed and one northbound lane will be open to traffic.
All three lanes in the southbound direction (which carry traffic headed to New England) will remain open on the Tappan Zee Bridge during the entire weekend.
The New York Thruway said drivers headed northbound on I-87/I-287 around the Tappan Zee Bridge should plan for severe delays from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and find alternate routes.
All northbound lanes are expected to reopen on Saturday and Sunday by 2 p.m.
The Thruway Authority said message signs around the region and Highway Advisory Radio 530 AM will have up to date information about the closures.
Motorists are strongly advised to avoid travel in this area during this time.
In case of inclement weather, the work will be postponed until Friday, May 6 beginning at 9 p.m., with completion by Saturday, May 7 at 2 p.m.
