Brian Green, 28, of Waterbury, had two bags of cocaine weighing 15.6 grams on him when he was traveling south on Thomaston Avenue Wednesday around 11:40 a.m., not far from the Department of Motor Vehicles, police said.
Green crossed the double yellow line into the northbound lane and struck a car driven by Mary Gabriele, 59, of Terryville. Green was thrown from his vehicle and died of his injuries. Gabriele was also killed in the crash.
Officers from both Waterbury Police and State Police spent hours at the scene investigating the crash. The investigation and scene took so long to complete because one of the cars got stuck up on the embankment.
Waterbury Deputy Chief Spagnolo said there were no other passengers in either car.
“It certainly appears speed was a factor,” Spagnolo said.
Police are still investigating the accident.
