SYOSSET, N.Y.--A small plane that was traveling from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to Plainville, Connecticut, crashed in a wooded area of Long Island on Tuesday.

The plane, which had three people aboard, intended to land at Robertson Field in Plainville. All three passengers--two adult men and an adult woman--died in the crash, according to PIX11.

At a press conference, it was reported that the pilot put out a mayday before the crash. Robert Gretz, from the National Transportation and Safety Board, said that the plane broke up in flight and that the debris was spread over a two-mile radius.

The pilot issued the mayday call and said there was an issue with the instrumentation--which is similar to the tools on a car's dashboard.

No one on the ground was injured.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, and a preliminary report will be issued in five to 10 days. Official findings may take nine months to a year.

The FAA released a statement on the crash: "A Beech BE35 aircraft crashed on Cold Spring Road in Syosset, NY at about 3:39 pm today. Check with local authorities on the condition of the three people on board. The aircraft was heading to Robertson Field in Plainville, CT from Myrtle Beach, SC. The FAA will investigate and the National Transportation Safety Board will determine the probable cause for the accident."

Based on records from FlightAware, the plane is registered to an owner in Bristol, Connecticut.

The NTSB said it expected to release another update Wednesday afternoon.
