EAST GRANBY — Fire officials say a New Jersey father and son were unharmed when their small private airplane crashed while preparing to land at Simsbury Airport.

Police said the plane was coming in to land around 7 p.m. Wednesday when it overshot the runway and crashed on the side of a road in East Granby. The pilot, Ralph Jones, and his son Tucker both declined medical attention at the scene.

A front loader was called in to upright the plane, which Federal Aviation Administration records say is a 1947 Piper PA-12 registered to Jones.

The airport remained open as authorities investigated. It’s unclear what caused the plane to crash. The FAA is continuing to look into the incident.
