NEWTOWN — A group planning a permanent memorial to the victims of the Newtown school shooting is looking for a new site after its first choice stirred a backlash.

A field at Newtown’s highest point with sweeping views of its rolling hills had been chosen by planners as the site to honor the 20 children and six educators killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Open space advocates, however, objected to construction on the pristine area known as the High Meadow. Critics argued that building a memorial could take away from the beauty of the area, which includes popular walking trails, and violate the town’s pledge to maintain the field as open space.

As more community members have spoken out, the planning commission agreed recently to go back and consider other options.
