HARTFORD – The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has closed two swimming areas and issued the first state water quality report of the summer season.
Chatfield Hollow State Park in Killingworth and Wharton Brook State Park in Wallingford were both closed due to high levels of bacteria.
The state parks listed here are the swimming areas and beaches that DEEP tests. This list also includes swimming areas where lifeguards are stationed to supervise the safety of swimmers
DEEP staff collects samples weekly and the samples are analyzed at the Department of Public Health Lab for the presence of certain indicator bacteria.
Indicator bacteria won’t make you sick, but are one of the tools used by public health and environmental protection authorities to evaluate the potential for contamination, according to DEEP.
Both closed sites are set to be resampled on Wednesday with the results being released on Thursday.
Local health departments are responsible for sampling municipal beaches and swimming areas.
