MIDDLEBURY — I-84 was shut down Thursday morning in Middlebury between exits 16 and 17 due to a major accident involving a tractor-trailer and a Toyota Prius.
Three people were injured in the crash, State Police said. They were taken to the St. Mary’s Hospital for treatment of non-threatening injuries. The driver of the truck had to be extricated from the cab.
According to the Department of Transportation, the tractor-trailer was carrying alcohol. Debris was scattered about the highway. Approximately 100 gallons of Diesel fuel was also spilled in the crash, but has since been cleaned up.
There are backups on the westbound side of the highway as well. All lanes but one has reopened by Thursday afternoon.
The Department of Environmental Protection sent crews to the scene to clean the fuel spill.
Connecticut State Police are handling the crash investigation.
