8 rescued from massive fire in large apartment building in Hartford

HARTFORD–There was a large apartment fire on Monday night in Hartford.

A four-story building located at 270 Laurel St. went up in flames around 9 p.m. Monday, and there was a very large response from the fire department, including 52 firefighters. The fire was declared a second-alarm about 10 minutes after it was first reported.

According to Chief Reginald Freeman, no one was injured in the fire, but firefighters did have to rescue eight residents with a ladder from the second and third floors. Firefighters did two sweeps of the building to make sure everyone got out safely.

The fire started when a resident fell asleep while cooking on the third floor, but it spread to the fourth, so it's unclear how extensive the damage is and how many people will be displaced. About 60 residents live in the building.
