SIMSBURY — Leaders at a private preparatory high school in Simsbury say an investigation shows that a former headmaster engaged in what the school calls inappropriate sexual conduct with students when he was there more than 60 years ago.

The Hartford Courant reports Westminster School recently announced to alumni and parents that the internal investigation found credible evidence against Arthur Milliken. Milliken was headmaster from 1936 to 1956. He died in 1973.

The school launched the inquiry following a complaint by a former student in December. The school said it found evidence of other cases of sexual misconduct by faculty members several decades ago. Those cases remain under investigation.

School officials said there are no safety concerns for current students.

Westminster is a coeducational institution with 390 boarding and day students.
