WETHERSFIELD — The DMV will resume issuing late fees for overdue emissions testing, the agency posted on its website Tuesday morning.
The agency temporarily stopped issuing them in August 2015 when it installed a new computer system. Then, the DMV kept the temporary stop in place until it completed a review of vehicle and late-fee data.
“With that review completed, DMV now needs to comply with state law requiring us to issue the bill,” the statement said.
If you no longer own the vehicle, you could still receive a late fee.
” The late fee notice was sent to the owner of the vehicle at the time the test deadline was missed,” the DMV addressed in their frequently asked questions and answers sections, you can find that here.
Also worth noting, you still have to pay the late fee even if you’ve since moved out of state.
“Yes, the emissions test late fee was assessed at a time when the vehicle was still listed on record as being registered in the state of Connecticut,” the DMV wrote.
The fee could be due to:
- The vehicle owner did not have an emissions test on the vehicle.
- The vehicle owner had the test more than 30 days past the due date.
- The vehicle failed an emissions test and did not have the vehicle retested within 60
“We know that this billing could be an unexpected inconvenience,” a DMV statement said. “We appreciate your understanding of our legal obligation to collect the late fee now that the system is ready to accept payments.”
If you think you owe a fee, you can check here, starting on Friday, June 24. The late fees will be issued on Thursday, June 23.
If you do receive a bill, you can pay here online, by mail, or in person at a DMV office.
