Worker killed in construction accident in West Haven

WEST HAVEN — A construction worker was killed Tuesday afternoon in an accident at a construction site on Boston Post Road, the West Haven Fire Captain said.

The worker was struck by a backhoe at a construction site. The accident happened around noon.

Police have identified the victim as 56-year-old Donald “Cary” Smith, of Bethany. He died of blunt trauma to the head, torso and lower left exremity after he was hit.

West Haven Police and Fire are investigating along with officials from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). OSHA investigates all workplace accidents.

The accident happened at a construction site on the New Haven-West Haven line, just west of the West River.
