MOOSUP -- Eight families were displaced after a fire damaged three buildings early Wednesday.

Crews were called out to the fire at 47 South Main St. around 2:40 a.m.  The 26 adults and 12 children displaced were taken to the Moosup Fire Department, which is nearby, said fire officials.

Detectives believe the fire started in the back of an abandoned building on South Main Street and spread quickly. A resident said she heard an explosion and minutes later realized there was a fire.

The fire started in a vacant building and spread two others, one of which was occupied. The building where the fire started had burned a number of years ago, according to officials.

They confirm that they're investigating reports of people playing with fireworks in the area, who also posted a video of it on Snapchat.

"Activity in the backyard and we're just looking at that to see if there's any credibility to it, in terms of when it was actually done, when it was made, when it was posted," Plainfield Fire Marshal, Deputy Chief Paul Yellin, said.

The Plainfield fire department was brought in for mutual aid. Moosup is a village in the town of Plainfield.
