NEW LONDON--For months the public has debated the legality of Hillary Clinton using a personal email server while she served as secretary of state, and the FBI has been conducting an investigation to determine if criminal charges will be filed. However, one local politician and Democratic delegate says the investigation needs to wrap up. Soon.
On Tuesday, former New London Mayor Daryl Finizio formally announced a White House petition to push President Obama into ensuring the FBI completes its investigation and announces the results before the Democratic National Convention, which is scheduled to be held in Philadelphia July 25 to 28.
Finizio, who was picked as a Connecticut delegate who supports Bernie Sanders, says it's important that delegates have all the knowledge before choosing the party's nominees, especially if the FBI intends to criminally indict Clinton.
"If released after the convention, and the party nominee is forced to withdraw as a result, party leaders and internal party procedures will select the nominee," Finizio wrote in the description for the online petition.
He added that because Obama has endorsed Clinton, and is in charge of the investigation, the integrity of the investigation is at stake.
"If it does not come out before the convention or the November election, the allegation will be made that the administration is deliberately suppressing this report from the American people to benefit someone the president has endorsed. I don't think this is happening, and I certainly hope that's not happening. It would lead to the impeachment of the president of the United States."
