ROCKY HILL — Two people were killed when their car slammed into a tree Sunday morning in Rocky Hill. Days later, officers are revealing new details about the crash.

On Sunday, June 19, around 5:15 a.m., a Rocky Hill officer observed a car driving recklessly on Maple Street, near the intersection with Gilbert Ave. The car was speeding and crossed the center line of  the road, police said in a statement released Thursday.

The officer put on his lights to pull over the car, and at first, the car complied. Then, as the officer walked up to the car, they sped off, slamming into the tree.

Both the driver the passengers were killed in the crash.

The driver, Nelson Viera, 27, of East Hartford has a record of previous arrests, and had a pending case from April in which he was released on bond. There is also an additional pending case and several previous arrests for Viera, according to Lt. Robert Catania.

Passenger Iran Brugueras Jr. of Hartford, 21, was also killed in the crash. A Gofundme page has been set up to help the family.

Rocky Hill Police and the The Office of the Chief Medical Examiners Officer are investigating the crash.
