SUFFIELD — The body of an alligator was found in the Connecticut River Sunday. But it turns out, the alligator was a fake.
The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection was investigating. Monday, DEEP confirmed the alligator was “stuffed.”
It was first reported that the alligator was dead when it was found. The “stuffed” gator was about four feet long and was found in the mud on the river’s shore in Suffield.
State Environmental Conservation (EnCon) Police responded to a report of a dead alligator in the Connecticut River, north of Hartford. As a result of the investigation it was determined that it was not a live alligator that died, it was a stuffed alligator. No further information is available at this time.
It is illegal to keep an alligator as a pet in Connecticut. In 2012, a live alligator was found at an Enfield bus stop. The reptile was sent to a facility in Massachusetts and then to Florida.
