HARTFORD -- The Fourth of July is now just days away and in one week or less folks will be setting off fireworks in celebration.
But what to do to keep your eyes safe? Ophthalmologist Dr. Robert Block from Acuity Eye Physicians and Surgeons joined FOX 61 Good Day Connecticut to talk about the precautions they need to take to enjoy a safe and happy Fourth of July weekend.
Fireworks Safety Tips
The American Academy of Ophthalmology emphasizes that the best way to avoid a potentially blinding fireworks injury is by attending a fireworks show put on by professionals rather than purchasing fireworks intended for home use. Unfortunately, these explosives are dangerous even when handled by professionals and injuries can still occur. So, if you plan to attend a community fireworks display the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends the following:
- Respect the safety barriers and view firework from at least 500 feet away
- Leave unexploded fireworks on the ground and contact the local fire or police departments for their assistance.
- If exploded fireworks debris enters your eye, immediately flush the eye with water and contact the nearest emergency medical volunteers.
What to do for a fireworks related eye injury
If an injury from fireworks occurs, remember:
- Seek medical attention immediately.
- Do not rub your eyes.
- Do not rinse your eyes.
- Do not apply pressure.
- Do not remove any objects that are stuck in the eye.
- Do not apply ointments or take any blood thinning pain medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen.
