THOMASTON — Connecticut state police have identified the officer who shot and killed a man who police said was wielding a knife over the weekend.

Authorities say Richard Galpin was the officer involved in the incident. They say the 32-year-old Galpin is a five-year veteran of the Thomaston Police Department.

Officers responded to a disturbance in Thomaston at around 7:15 p.m. Sunday. Police said Galpin shot 27-year-old Daniel Reyes at least once as he approached officers while armed with a knife. Police said Reyes ignored demands to stop.

Reyes was taken to Waterbury Hospital where he was pronounced dead. No other injuries were reported.

State police are investigating the shooting.
