HARTFORD — Connecticut Governor Dannel P. Malloy has used his own authority to call for the lowering of the American flag only occasionally during his 5 ½ years in office.

An Associated Press review of such gubernatorial requests across the country found that the Democrat called for the flag to be lowered twice in 2015. The first time occurred after a mass shooting at a Chattanooga, Tennessee, military installation. President Barack Obama later followed through with a request that all flags be lowered nationally.

The second time, in December, marked the three-year anniversary of the Newtown tragedy.

When Malloy first took office, he would typically call for the U.S. flag to be lowered to honor a fallen Connecticut service member. More recently, mass shootings have prompted such action.
