WEST HAVEN–As the storms that rolled through Connecticut Thursday afternoon, two people who were out for a walk near Oak Street Beach in West Haven decided to take cover under a tree to hide from the rain.

However, when the storm hit, lightning hit the tree, and the electrical current knocked the two people to the ground, according to West Haven officials.

The lightning didn’t directly hit the people, thankfully, so they are expected to be okay.

Both victims–a man and woman about 50 and 45–were alert and conscious when taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital around 5:50 p.m., and are expected to be released after being evaluated for minor injuries.

According to the National Weather Service, the odds of being hit by lightning are about 1 to 1.2 million; on average, less than 300 people per year are injured, and about 30 die.
