NEW HAVEN — A New Haven pastor was arrested Monday charged with having a sexual relationship with a minor. Police said in a statement Tuesday that Walter Williams, 59, met the girl because she was a member of his church and its choir.
According to the affidavit, Williams had as many as six sexual encounters with the girl between July 2015 and April 2016.
The girl’s mother learned of their relationship when she read Facebook messages on her daughter’s phone, she told police.
The girl described to police six encounters with Williams: twice at his home in Northford, twice at the church, and twice at a vacant rental property that Williams owns.
On July 7, police interviewed Williams, who they said admitted to “five or six” sexually encounters with the girl.
On Monday, July 11, Williams was arrested and charged with sexual assault in the fourth degree, five counts of sexual assault in the second degree and three counts of risk of injury to a minor. He was held on $250,000 bond and arraigned Tuesday morning.
