GROTON–Two Rhode Island men were arrested Wednesday after police found 29 kilograms of cocaine in their cars.
Troopers spotted two cars weaving in-and-out of traffic on I-95 north, near exit 88, and pulled them over. The Department of Transportation was doing mowing in the area, which means construction zone signs would have been out, indicating cars should slow down.
Both cars had Rhode Island license plates, and were about 15 miles from hitting the Rhode Island border when they were pulled over.
The first car, a 2012 Nissan Maxima, was being driven by Arnulfo Hiciano, 33, of North Providence, Rhode Island; the second car, a 2014 Dodge Ram, was being driven by Giovanni Carmona, 31, of Providence, Rhode Island.
During the stop, police learned that there were narcotics in Hiciano’s car, the Maxima, and had a K9 search. The dog found two cardboard boxes in the trunk, and inside were 29 kilograms of drugs. The drugs were worth $2.9 million. Police also found $5,472, and seized both cars.
Hiciano said the drugs weren’t his, and that he was traveling with Carmona, the driver of the Ram that was also pulled over.
Both Hiciano and Carmona were charged with possession of cocaine with intent to sell, possession of cocaine and failure to maintain established lane. Both were held on $100,000 bond and will appear in court on Thursday.
