HARTFORD--In the wake of documents indicating that some of the terrorists involved in the September 11 attacks had ties to Saudi Arabia, a new bill may give survivors and victims' families the chance to sue the foreign government for any role it may have played in the attacks.
The Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act would allow the families and victims to sue nations, including Saudi Arabia, that may sponsor or support violent extremism.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal is one of those supporting the bill, and joined with families on Tuesday to speak out in support of it.
Brett Eagleson of Middletown, who's father died on September 11, 2001, said, "I was 15-years-old on 9/11 when I lost my dad Bruce Eagleson. I never had the opportunity to have my dad teach me how to drive a car. I didn't have my dad there for my high school graduation. He won't be there for my wedding. My dad never got a chance to see his grandkids, and here we are standing in front of you pleading with the government for their support."
The Senate passed the legislation in May, and the hope is for the act to be voted on in the House before the congressional session ends this fall.
