HIGGANUM — Two days after police and the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection were at a home on Ponsett Road in the Higganum section of Haddam for several hours in response to a narcotics situation, two people have been arrested.

On Monday, around 6:45 a.m., police responded to the home as part of a narcotics investigation, and while there found unknown chemicals. The area was shut down as a precaution, and State Police called in DEEP, the Drug Enforcement Agency and Haddam Volunteer Fire Department to assist in the investigation, including to check for air quality and safely dispose of any toxins found at the home.

DEEP agents and police officers wore hazmat suits to protect themselves from any contaminants, and barrels could be seen being brought out of the house.

The chemicals were determined to not be hazardous.

On Wednesday, police announced that they’d arrested Jesse Vernil, 32, and Megan Vincelett, 31, both of whom live in the home that was being investigated. Both were charged with possession of a controlled substance.

The Department of Children and Families also responded to assist with two children who were in the home.

Vernil and Vincelett were released on bond and will appear in court August 3.
