NEW HAVEN – A child was hit by a car in New Haven Friday night, according to police.
At around 8:15 p.m., police said they were dispatched to the intersection of Peck and Rowe Streets for a child hit by a car.
Before they could arrive on the scene, police said that neighbors rushed to the child’s aid, because the child was trapped beneath the car. The neighbors were able to lift the car enough to free him. The child, a 13-year-old boy who lives nearby on Dover Street, was taken to Yale–New Haven Hospital. Police said he was conscious and alert at the scene.
The driver of the Nissan Murano is a 24-year-old woman who lives in the neighborhood, according to police
Police said the child was hit as he rode his bicycle into the center of the intersection and into the path of the car. The driver had no stop sign and didn’t violate any laws. There were no lights on the bicycle and the accident occurred after dark. Speed was not a factor as the driver was able to stop only a few feet from the point of impact.
Police said the child has suffered injuries to both legs and one arm, as well as internal injuries. He is expected to recover and is listed in stable condition.
The intersection was closed for just under two hours and has since been reopened.
