NEW YORK — Police have reopened a Times Square intersection after an unattended backpack closed off the area.

Officials closed 43rd Street and Broadway to pedestrians and traffic around 10:45 p.m.

A bomb squad was called to the scene after a backpack was found on the ground.

By 11 p.m., police had removed the barriers and began allowing traffic through the area.

It was not immediately clear what was in the bag.

Last week, officers arrested Hector Meneses, 52, of Queens, after they said he threw a device into a police cruiser in Times Square and held officers at bay for several hours. Officers raced out of the square with the device and later Meneses was located in Columbus Circle.  He barricaded himself in his vehicle and negotiated with police for several hours. Police closed off the area around Columbus Circle for hours, disrupting traffic and public transit throughout Manhattan.
