WEST HAVEN – Officials are reopening shoreline beaches in West Haven after successful test results, and swimming will be allowed this weekend.

The city reopened Bradley Point Beach Friday and will reopen Oak Street and Altschuler beaches Saturday morning.

City Health Director Maureen B. Lillis said Friday that water samples showed “fragments of decomposing seaweed, which are nontoxic and pose no health risks to the public.”

Tests were performed Friday and bacteria levels have remained elevated at Oak and Altschuler beaches. As a precaution, swimming, fishing and wading are still prohibited until Saturday.

The health department originally closed the shoreline beaches on Wednesday after a huge mass was seen in the water. It was originally thought to be an oil slick, but was later determined to be the seaweed, which broke down from the excessive heat.
