WESTPORT — A New York father and his teenage son were rescued by a bystander at Sherwood Island State Park after struggling in waters off the park’s East Beach.

Westport police and state environmental conservation police were called to the scene Sunday afternoon but 31-year-old Shuja Nagi and his son were already safely ashore.

Authorities say one of the victims had water in his lungs. Both were taken to Norwalk Hospital.

Reports initially suggested up to three swimmers were in distress at the Westport park. Divers and marine units from Westport, Fairfield and Norwalk searched the Long Island Sound for the other swimmer but came up empty.

Westport Police Chief Foti Koskinas says he’s confident there were no other victims.

Five lifeguards were working at the time of the incident.
