Hundreds fight plan to demolish 9 buildings in historic area on UConn campus

STORRS — In the face of destruction, hundreds of strangers are teaming up to save buildings in an historic area.

Nine buildings on the UConn Storrs campus that are on the National Register of Historic Places are set to be demolished, which is angering some Connecticut residents.

The houses, built around 1920, have remained abandoned for more than a decade, and would cost $9 million to be renovated.

UConn officials want to tear the buildings down and create open green space. However, a petition already signed by hundreds is fighting that plan.

“It means a lot to me and I know once these resources are gone they’re gone forever, they’re irreplaceable and they’re a pat of our collective national heritage and I really feel it’s important to preserve them,” said Margaret McCutcheon Faber, who wants a structural engineer to take a second look at the cost for renovations.

A meeting on Wednesday will help decide the fate of the buildings.
